THE STATE OF CHURCH AND SOCIETY IN THE DIGITAL AGE AN INDONESIAN CONTEXT
This study aims at providing a general landscape of the development and the impact of digital technology on the life of people in Indonesia. Technology has brought about multiple advantages on the social and political spheres as well as on the family and spiritual aspects of people’s lives, it also has some disadvantages. The present study focuses particularly on how the Church in Indonesia has been involved in the ‘digital culture’ by providing several religious websites and mobile apps to nurture people’s spiritual needs as many are shifting to an online mentality. It finds that the presence of the digital technology has nourished the faith and assisted to bridge generational and digital divides, but at the same time has contributed to the growing privatization of individuals which affects the family life. Inspired by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelli Gaudium, the Church, in her missionary presence in the digital era should always be guided by the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ should always be the central point of her proclamation. In a more practical way, the personnel involved in such missionary undertaking should be competent in the digital world.
